In order to quickly disseminate today’s urgent coronavirus warning, the government of the United Kingdom contacted major mobile services providers like EE, o2, Vodafone, and Three.

In the midst of the continuing coronavirus epidemic, all carriers in the UK have been given the instruction, which is a first of its kind, to send a message to consumers on the government’s behalf.

Residents of the UK are being urged to remain indoors and to venture out only to obtain food, seek medical attention, or perform activities deemed absolutely necessary.

In the warning, individuals are urged to remain indoors and a link is provided to the official coronavirus response website for the United Kingdom government.

Because an emergency alert system that had been tested seven years ago but was never completed and put into place, the United Kingdom’s government has been compelled to collaborate with UK carriers in order to disseminate the information.

Lord Toby Harris, who once served as chair of the National Trading Standards Board, has leveled accusations against the government of the United Kingdom for allegedly engaging in departmental squabbling around the alert system.

“It’s fallen between government departments as to who is going to pick up the cost, who is going to lead on it, and all sorts of issues,” Harris said in a statement to The Guardian.

The government of the United Kingdom is in discussion with the mobile network provider EE about the possibility of using data on people’s location and how they use their phones to determine whether or not they are genuinely at home.

Before the data can be used to aid in the fight against the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, this presents a number of privacy concerns that will need to be resolved.
