On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled India’s first 5G testbed, allowing entrepreneurs and industry participants to test and evaluate technologies ahead of the introduction of the 5G network. They’d be less reliant on foreign infrastructure if they did this.

The 5G testbed is the result of a multi-institutional collaboration initiative totalling roughly Rs 220 crore and spearheaded by IIT Madras. There will be 5 separate sites where the facility can be used.

At the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), where the testbed was unveiled, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the initiative as a major step toward India’s ability to fend for itself in the development of crucial and cutting-edge technology.

“I’d want to extend an invitation to my fellow young people, academics, and businesses to utilise the 5G testing centre in their development efforts.

The introduction of 5G technology would lead to improvements in national administration, quality of life, and the ability to conduct business “Moreover, he said.

The Prime Minister announced that preparations had begun to roll out 6G service before the end of this decade.

To test and certify their products for the deployment of a 5G network, industry players had to travel abroad in the absence of a 5G testbed.

Adding that 5G technology will also bring beneficial changes in governance, ease of living, and ease of conducting business, PM Modi said that connection will decide the rate of progress in India in the 21st century.

In turn, this will stimulate expansion across the board, including in agriculture, healthcare, education, infrastructure, and the logistics industry.
