Fitness and the metaverse are two areas of focus for the newly renamed Meta (formerly Facebook). It was announced recently that Meta had bought Within, the company behind the popular Oculus Quest app Supernatural.
Similar to Amazon’s Halo fitness video service and Apple’s planned Fitness Plus app, the programme uses Apple Watch connections to track users’ real-time heart rate in real-time.
Oculus Quest’s Supernatural was a pioneering subscription-based programme (soon to be called the Meta Quest).

The app’s motion-tracking workouts and video avatar teachers (boxing was just introduced) give it the appearance of a more intense fitness version of the virtual reality game Beat Saber.
CEO Chris Milk stated in a statement that “our relationship with Meta means we’ll have greater resources to expand and deliver you [Virtual Reality users] even more music, more inventive methods to work out,” he said on Friday.
In the future, Meta may be able to include more fitness and health goals in its headsets and other goods. “To encourage other app developers to create VR fitness experiences, we’ll work together to find ways to improve future technology to better support these kinds of apps.
There are numerous third-party fitness apps that can flourish in virtual reality, and we believe this will be a huge hit “In a statement, Meta’s VP of Play Jason Rubin said:
One of the most exciting features of Meta’s software is support for connected smartwatches for real-time heart rate readings during exercises.

However, there is no deeper support for connected smartwatches in Meta’s own movement-tracking fitness software called Oculus Move, which is available on the Oculus Quest.
CNET interviewed Mark Zuckerberg about his interest in fitness and fitness sensors earlier this year.
A smartwatch from Meta is expected, as well as wrist-based neural input devices for wearable smart glasses in the works.
