The central government has just released some brand new regulations for the various telecommunications providers.
According to this, it is now required of telecommunications companies to keep records of ISD, which includes records of international calls, satellite phone calls, conference calls, and messages made on the general network as well as over the Internet for a period of at least two years.
This requirement applies to companies that provide both international and domestic services.
The Unified License (UL) rules were modified in December by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), which increased the storage period for call data records and internet logs from the previous provision of one year to two years. Previously, the storage period was only one year.

Modifications to the guidelines in light of security concerns

UL holders are organisations in the telecommunications industry like Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea, and BSNL.
These firms offer all varieties of telecommunications services with the exception of satellite phone services.
On the network, the Licensee is responsible for maintaining all of the commercial records, including call data records, exchange details records, and IP details records.
For the purposes of verification and increased safety, the Department of Telecom has issued a directive requiring the storage of calling records and messages for a minimum of two years.
After that, none of these calls or communications may be erased under any circumstances, unless specifically instructed to do so by the licensor.
Companies that have subscribed to these licences and fallen under the purview of the amendment include the likes of Tata Communications, Cisco’s Webex, AT&T Global Network, and others.
Call logs on the internet will also be required to be preserved for the foreseeable future.

A similar amendment has been granted for the licences that have been issued to BSNL for the provision of a satellite phone call and data services, in addition to the licences that have been issued to VSAT licence holders.
