To ensure your computer’s PSU is functioning properly, read this article’s guidance on performing a power supply test. This guide was written with the Coolmax PS-228 ATX power supply tester in mind, but the steps should apply to any LCD-equipped PSU tester.

Learn the Ins and Outs of Putting Your Power Supply Through Its Paces with A Tester

It should take you no more than 30 minutes to finish the process if you know what you’re doing with a computer and can follow directions. However, people without prior experience with PC upkeep may find it difficult to use. Read the precautions carefully before continuing. After you have completed these steps, you can move forward.

To shut down your computer, you need disconnect the power cables from all of its components. Working from the bundle of power cables coming from the power supply is a simple technique to verify that every power connector has been unplugged. At the end of each set of wires, there should be a power connector or two.

You don’t have to take out the computer’s power brick or unplug any peripherals that aren’t directly tied to the power brick.

Connectors and cables for power sources should be gathered together. As you tidy up the power cords, move them as far away from the computer’s chassis as possible so that you can easily attach the cords to the power supply tester.

Make sure that the power supply’s voltage switch is set to the correct level for your country. This switch needs to be set to 110V/115V for use in the United States.

Connect both the ATX 24-pin and 4-pin Motherboard Power Connectors to the power supply tester.

The power supply unit (PSU) you use may require a different type of motherboard connector than the standard 4-pin variant. One type should be plugged into the 24-pin main power connector at a time if multiple types are present.

Connect the adapter to a working outlet and turn on the power switch. There may not be a power switch on the back of some adapters. When testing a power supply unit, it is not necessary to have the PSU itself turned on; simply connecting in the device will do.
