You might need to keep some documents private if you share a computer with others. Depending on the version of Microsoft® Windows® your computer is running, there are several ways to do this. If you’re not sure which version of Windows is installed on your computer, see this article for additional details.

Anyone who uses a single computer with you should have their own account, per standard procedure. This makes it easier for everyone to get the software and data they need.

How to Password-Protect a Folder

When a folder is password-protected, a password must be entered in order to view the list of documents inside the folder. In a password-protected folder or a folder without password protection, you may also password-protect certain files. Both directories and files follow the same process.

Windows 7

Go to the folder you wish to password-protect in Windows Explorer. Place a right-click on the folder.

Properties can be chosen from the menu. Click the General tab on the popup that displays.
To safeguard data, click the Advanced option and then choose Encrypt content. Select OK.

The login credentials for Windows will be required.
To make sure you can access the folder, double-click on it.

Windows 8 and Windows 10

In Windows 8 or Windows 10, it is not feasible to use Windows to password-protect a folder. Either utilize a zipped package or download third-party software. Make careful to obtain any third-party software you decide to utilize from a reliable source.

Zipped folder

If the Windows version you are using does not allow password protection, you should consider password-protecting compressed files instead. You may apply a password after putting the files you want to secure in a zip file.

Select the files you want to enclose in a zip file in Windows Explorer by selecting them using the right-click menu.

Select the Zip folder under Send to (compressed). To name and save the folder, simply adhere to the directions.

The zipped file should be double-clicked before choosing File and Add Password.
Click Apply after entering the necessary data.

How to hide a folder

When a folder or file is hidden in Windows, it does not show up in the directory list until the box labeled Don’t display hidden files, folders, or drives is cleared.

Windows 7, 8, and 10

To conceal a file or folder, right-click. Choosing Properties
Check the box next to Hidden in the Attributes section of the General tab.
Tap Apply.

You must activate a different setting if the file or folder is still visible in the directory.

Click the File tab in Windows Explorer after opening it.

After choosing Options, choose the View tab.

Under the heading Hidden files and folders, choose Don’t reveal hidden files, folders, or drives.
Repeat the steps above, but click Show hidden files, folders, and drives to see your hidden files or folder.

Conclusion

Although Microsoft removed the option to password-protect a folder, you may still use a password-protected zipped folder or hide files and folders so they don’t show up in the directory list to keep your sensitive information hidden.
