Group chats are particularly practical since they let you hold various conversations with many people at once and facilitate smooth communication. Nonetheless, there may be times when you wish to exit a group discussion in Messages but are unable to do so for some reason.
The reasons why you can’t delete group chats from your iPhone are listed below, along with potential alternatives.
Why Am I Unable to Exit a Group Message in Apple Messages?
In Apple Messages, there are two different types of group chats: iMessage groups and SMS/MMS groups. The former is dominated by Apple users who utilize the company’s instant messaging service to communicate and share files, whilst the latter consists of both Apple and non-Apple users.
Apple employs blue voice bubbles for iMessage groups and green text bubbles for SMS/MMS groups to distinguish between the two. You will be in an SMS/MMS group even if the other members are all Apple users as long as there is at least one non-Apple user in the group.

The worst part is that SMS/MMS groups don’t let you leave because you’re not truly using an instant messaging system. Instead, your carrier receives these messages.
Only when all group members are Apple users may you delete group communications from an iMessage group? In SMS/MMS groups, however, you can only depart if there are at least three persons present and they are all utilizing Apple devices. So, it is likely that one or more individuals aren’t utilizing Apple devices with iMessage turned on if you are unable to leave.
With an IPhone, How Do You Quit a Group Chat?
As previously stated, you can only quit a group chat if everyone is using an Apple device and there are at least three other participants. Now, if that’s the case, here’s what you need to do:
- In Messages, click the group chat icon.
- At the top of the thread, tap the group name or icon.
- Next, click Leave this Conversation at the bottom of the page and, when requested, indicate that you wish to go.

How to Exit a Group Conversation If You Can’t
If you are part of an SMS/MMS group, you cannot leave. But, you can still silence the message thread to silence the noise. How to do it:
- In Messages, click the group chat icon.
- At the top of the thread, tap the group name or icon.
- Toggle the Hidden Alerts switch on by scrolling down.
As an alternative, swipe left over the thread of the group message and select the Alerts option (the bell icon in purple). When you do this, a crescent moon icon indicating that the group chat is muted will show next to it. Swipe left and press the Alerts button once more when you’re prepared to unmute the group.

Notification Prevention Burnout
A basic human need is to maintain relationships with those you love. Yet, exchanging pointless messages or talking about subjects you’re not particularly interested in can be grating.
You could occasionally choose isolation and a few quiet hours to concentrate on your task. So, you might benefit from turning off group conversations or abandoning them altogether to enjoy some much-needed quiet.
