A desktop backdrop image is pre-installed on all Mac computers. To be sure, you may already know this, but your background image is customizable. Apple provides a wide variety of pre-installed backgrounds, and you can even upload your own.

Changing the Macintosh Desktop Background
Select System Preferences from the Apple menu to alter the background image on your Mac. To set an image as your desktop background, head to Desktop & Screen Saver > Desktop > Desktop Pictures.
- Bring up the Apple menu. In the upper left corner of your screen, you’ll see an Apple icon; click it.
- To adjust settings, click System Preferences. Clicking this button will launch your computer’s settings menu.
- Select Desktop & Screen Saver as the next step.
- Then select the Desktop option. This appears at the top of the window.
- The next step is to go to Settings > Desktop Pictures. This option can be accessed via the Apple menu in the window’s sidebar.
- Choose a picture to use as your desktop backdrop. On the right side of the window, you’ll see the wallpaper options. You can also change the background color of your desktop if you choose. On macOS Mojave and later, you may also choose a dynamic background that will gradually darken when the sun goes down.
- Click the plus button to upload your own custom background image. Location: the lower left corner of the window.
- Then, click the Choose button after navigating to the location of your image.
- Next, decide on a picture.
Note: If you don’t want your images to be deleted, make sure to put them in a safe place. Don’t put the background image in your Downloads folder or on your Desktop.
- If you select the box labeled “Change picture,” your desktop wallpaper can be rotated. You need to have more than one image in the folder you choose for the background in order to rotate it.
- In the end, choose the cycle rate for your desktop wallpaper. By selecting the option labeled “Random order,” your photo collection can be randomly rearranged.

The Photos App and How to Set It as Your Desktop Background
If you’re using the Photos app on your Mac, you can set any image as your desktop backdrop by right-clicking or Ctrl-clicking it. When you go to the Share menu, select Set Desktop Picture.
- Launch the photo-editing program.
- Then, select the wallpaper you want with a right-click or a Ctrl-click.
- Once you’re done, choose to share.
- Click Set Desktop Picture When You’re Done.

Using Finder to Alter the Background of Your Computer
From the Finder, select an image and then click Set Desktop Picture to make it your computer’s background.
- Launch Finder and navigate to the desired picture.
- Then, select the image with a right-click or a Ctrl-click.
- Once you’ve found an image you like, select Set Desktop Picture.
