many years, many years! — AirDrop ($500 at Best Buy) allows iPhone owners to swiftly and conveniently exchange files, images, movies, and links with other iPhones nearby.
By utilizing AirDrop, you may avoid the hassle of sending a photo, compressing it, degrading its quality, or clogging up the discussion thread with useless links and files.
Nearby Share, Google’s take on AirDrop, is now available for Android phones.
Which Phones Does Nearby Share Work with Right Now?
It may take some time until Nearby Share appears on your phone because Google is progressively spreading out the functionality, as is common with new Android features.
By following the steps given below, you may see if the functionality has been introduced to your device. The function will ultimately go out to all smartphones running Android 6.0 and above, but for now, Google is just providing Nearby Share to its own Pixel and Samsung phones.
Although it is now only available for sharing between Android phones and tablets, Google has plans to enable Nearby Share file transfers across Chrome OS and Android.
Congratulations if the Nearby Share option appears! You’ll have to wait a little longer if not.
How to Set up Nearby Share on An Android Phone or Tablet
You must activate Nearby Share before it appears as a sharing option. You don’t need to install any updates or take any other action on your end. When you add it to your device, it will just appear.
Open the Settings app on your phone, then choose Google > Device connections > Nearby sharing.
You don’t yet have the functionality if Nearby Share isn’t offered as an option, therefore you’ll need to periodically keep checking.
You must enable it the first time you access the Nearby Share page. Select one of the three privacy choices after tapping Turn On.
All Contacts: When your phone is on and unlocked, any of your contacts who have Nearby Share enabled will view it as an accessible device.
Only the contacts you’ve chosen will be able to view your phone while it’s turned on and unlocked as a nearby shared device.
Hidden: Unless you have Nearby Share open, no one will be able to see your phone as an accessible device. (If your phone notices that someone nearby is using Nearby Share, a notification will appear requesting you to open Nearby Share so that your device is visible.)

Send or Receive with Nearby Share
You can use Nearby Share to transmit files to individuals who are in the same room as you once it has been activated and set up.
Ask your friend to unlock their phone and leave the display on if you’re transferring a file. You must have your phone unlocked and the screen on if you’re the recipient.
Here’s how to send using Nearby Share when both phones are in use:
- You must use the Share option when you locate anything you wish to share, such as a link in Chrome.
- In the list of apps, look for Nearby Share and touch it.
- Your screen will display a little window at the bottom informing you that it is looking for a contact to share with. Tap on your friend’s profile symbol when it locates their device.
- The recipient’s device will show a popup informing them of the sender and the nature of the message. Having them press Accept will magically move anything you’re sending from your phone to theirs.
Google advises bringing the devices closer to one another, activating and deactivating airplane mode, or turning Bluetooth on and off if the transfer is having trouble finishing.
During the feature testing, I also fleetingly noticed a popup that suggested that one of the troubleshooting steps was to confirm that your address book had the contact’s Google email address.
Once you’ve mastered Nearby Share, spend some time becoming familiar with all of Android 10’s navigational gestures. We have some features we adore in Android 11, or you may wait and see what’s coming. Android 11 is currently available for installation on supported smartphones.
