Even while Apple makes it simple to set up, you can’t perform the kind of complex features that would make this much more helpful. It is convenient and straightforward to be able to have your phone calls forwarded to another number.
There are numerous reasons for having multiple phone numbers, and when you do, there are numerous reasons for wanting to answer them on a single phone. Any call can be forwarded to any number at any time using Apple’s iOS 12. Nevertheless, several restrictions make this feature less practical than it could be.
Simple Setup
While you are in an area with cell service, you must set up Call Forwarding. Nevertheless, it is only true during setup; once that is complete, you may even completely turn off the phone and the forwarding feature will still function.
Go to Settings on your iPhone, scroll down, and touch Phone. Next, click Call Forwarding.
A new screen will appear with only the option “Call Forwarding” and an on/off toggle that will be set to “off.” Once you turn it on, a new option labeled “Advance To” appears.
The right arrow will activate a numeric keypad for you to tap on. Naturally, this is the place where you input the phone number to which you want to forward calls. Unexpectedly, you cannot simply select a number from your contacts list; you must type one.
Even more unexpectedly, there isn’t a Save or Done button.
To go back, you simply enter the number and touch the button.
You’re done; you’re ready. The number you provided is permanent, albeit your iPhone may convert it to an international number depending on your location and your phone number.
Aside from when it isn’t. We occasionally discovered that the number could disappear if you forcibly quit System Preferences for whatever reason. Don’t do that, then.

That’s All There Is to It.
Hence, setting up Call Forwarding is not difficult, but you have already noticed the first restriction – you can only forward to one number. You know what to do every Monday night if you need to route calls to a different number on Tuesdays.
But, there is a further immediate restriction that applies to many, if not the majority, iPhone users. Call Forwarding can be turned on or off, but it stops working after a few rings.
You can instruct your iPhone to transmit a call to another number if you don’t pick up after a certain number of rings or a certain amount of time. This feature is known as conditional call forwarding.
As it is largely up to individual carriers, Apple is not to blame for most people’s inability to use this feature.
Yet, the process for activating Conditional Call Forwarding is archaic even if your carrier does enable it. You must call a predetermined number provided by the carrier and use code commands like #67*.
You are aware that Apple would have a straightforward on/off switch if they handled this. Nevertheless, they can’t handle it, so they don’t.
Shortcuts and Do Not Disturb
There is more Apple could do, even with the restrictions carriers place on conditional forwarding and the restriction that you can only forward to a single number.
For example, when you activate Do Not Disturb from Control Center, there is a lot of intelligence about turning it back on after an event or when you leave a location built in. There must be a way to incorporate a Forward Calls option under Do Not Disturb.
Since that Call Forwarding is only an on/off toggle once you’ve input a number once, that could be a simple on/off switch in the Do Not Disturb menu.
That is regulating a setting on your phone; the carrier is not needed for any further support. Expanding the Siri Shortcuts‘ Phone options would also not work. For the time being, your only real option is to pass a phone number to Shortcuts for it to ring.
You could create routines even if Call Forwarding may be enabled using Shortcuts. Forward incoming calls to your assistant or a coworker if they arrive while Do Not Disturb is activated and during business hours.

Accept It and Move Forward.
All things considered, however, it is advantageous that you may leave your iPhone at home while traveling overseas and be assured that all calls will reach your manager.
We may have another suggestion for anything Apple could add to this, though, if that concept simply made you pause as it did us.
Selective Call Forwarding is what we want. Instead, for example, redirecting calls from your spouse who can’t seem to remember that you ordered them never to call you at work, only divert calls from certain clients.
