According to Apple, a “shortcut” is “a quick method to get one or more things done using your apps,” and the company’s free Shortcuts app is a useful time-saving tool.
There are pre-made Shortcuts like “Speed Dial,” which allows you to quickly call a certain contact, and “Running Late,” which can send a message to contact if you’re going to be late to a scheduled meeting. The “Gallery” portion of the Shortcuts app allows you to do just that.
Create your own multi-step Shortcuts with the Shortcuts app. Create a “Surf Time” shortcut that checks the surf report, provides directions to the beach and plays your surf music all in one go using this example of an Apple Shortcut.
Though numerous Shortcuts may be initiated with a few taps in the Shortcuts app, we’ll be looking at several pre-made alternatives that are especially well-suited for Siri’s voice control.
Shortcuts and Siri integration
Siri, Apple’s digital assistant, is compatible with shortcuts on iOS devices. Siri may be instructed to execute any saved Shortcut. Any iOS or iPadOS device, as well as HomePod and Apple Watch, may use Siri to trigger a Shortcut.
How to Run a Shortcut with Siri
Siri must be called for in order for a Shortcut to be executed. On your iPhone, iPad, HomePod, or Apple Watch, say “Hey Siri,” and then state the name of the Shortcut you want to use, such as “Instructions Home.”

Siri will then provide you with turn-by-turn directions.

The Top Shortcuts that Work with Siri
It’s easier to include Siri into certain Shortcuts than others, such as when you need to use your phone hands-free, as in the case of a car.
Search for the one you want in the Shortcuts Gallery’s search bar, tap it, and then, while viewing it, tap “Get Shortcut” in the blue bar near the bottom of the screen to have it added to your device’s Shortcuts app.
Here are a few of the top Siri Shortcuts that you can start using right away.
- Speed Dial
A great first one, as it adds the contact to “Speed Dial” so that you can quickly call them by asking Siri to do so.
- Share Location
From a safety standpoint, this is excellent. If you tell Siri to convey your location to a specific person through SMS, she’ll do just that.
- Directions Home
This Shortcut will launch “Directions Home” from your current location, using the home address you entered, to help you find your way home.
- Running Late
This ingenious Shortcut may send an SMS message to contact to let them know you’ll be late, and then use the Maps app and your current position to provide them with directions and an estimated arrival time.
- Make Top 25 Playlist

If you’re in the mood for some tunes but don’t have much time to put up a playlist, just tell Siri to “Make Top 25 Playlist,” and she’ll compile the 25 songs you listen to the most.

- Walk to Coffee Shop
While this Shortcut’s default configuration provides directions to the closest coffee shop, it may be modified to provide directions to any nearby business, including restaurants and shops.
- Say Cheese
This is a cool shortcut that allows you to capture pictures without using your hands. You may take a picture with your phone by saying “Hey Siri, Say Cheese” after installing the app.
- Do Not Disturb Timer
Using Siri to trigger the DND Timer is a useful time-saving feature. Instead of fiddling around with your phone’s settings to activate Do Not Disturb mode, you can just set an alarm.
- Intelligent Power
Ask Siri to turn on “Intelligent Power” if your phone’s battery is low so that it can conserve power until you can connect to a charger.
- RSS Reader
Once this is set up, Siri may read you a summary of the most recent articles from your chosen RSS sources.
Imagine how Much Time You’ll Be Saving.
