Perhaps it’s no surprise that there are so many tips and tricks and hacks for Microsoft Windows that you may not have known about.
Whether it’s how to put a checkbox in Microsoft Word, Excel, or Google Docs, or how to insert a tick or a cross sign in Microsoft Word or Excel, there are numerous queries regarding how to maximize Windows use.
Nine of our favorite Windows hacks and tricks are listed below, and for those of you with Windows 7, we’ve provided 11 great tips and tricks(opens in a new tab) to help you get the most out of your operating system.
- Shake Window to Minimise
This is a favorite of ours. To shake a window, click and drag it a few times, then release the mouse button. All of your other windows will be minimized, leaving you with a clean workspace.
2. Deleting browser history made easy
To clear your browsing history without having to search through your browser’s settings, press Ctrl + Shift + Del on your keyboard. To get to the menu, just click on it!
- Select the Address Bar

Any time you’ve tried to copy or remove a long URL from the browser address bar, do you know how difficult it is to highlight the URL? Is it worth it? Instead, simply press the F6 key to bring up the URL in a pop-up window. Magic.
- Ditch the Ctrl + Alt + Del Combo
When a computer fails, most users immediately open the task manager by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del. The task manager can be opened by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc. After all, the fewer procedures you have to go through when your computer is about to fail, the better.
With this strategy, you don’t have to worry about a sleight-of-hand feeling when you access the task manager.
5. God Mode
All of the operating system’s control panels can be found in the Windows Master Control Panel, or “God Mode.” Create a new folder on your desktop (or wherever you choose) and rename it as follows:
GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
The “GodMode” bit can be changed, but the full-stop and the rest must remain unchanged. Its icon will be changed, and you’ll have full access to all of Windows’ most useful capabilities after renaming it.
- Entering file names into the command line
The most vexing part of trying to run a file after DOS has been opened is having to type in the entire file directory: Library/Pictures, etc.
Simply drag the file into your command prompt instead, and it will be entered automatically. Simple!
7. Go directly to the desktop

Windows had a “Show desktop” icon on the taskbar when it first came out. As a result, you can simply press Win + D instead. The Win button is located between the left Ctrl and Alt keys and has a wavy Windows flag icon.
8. Rename Many Files at The Same Time.
You can select a bunch of files at once and press F2 to give them all the same name. A (1) or (2) will also be added to the end of each file name in Windows to avoid confusion.

9. Instantly Lock the Computer
It’s a good idea to get into the habit of clicking Win + L every time you leave your desktop alone if you’re around pals who could try to change your Facebook information just for fun.
If you do this, your computer will return to its lock screen, requiring your password for anyone attempting to make an embarrassing status update. Logging out, on the other hand, close all of your open windows and documents.
