ZDNET reports that multiple Twitter users are seeing their deleted tweets resurface on the site at an alarming rate and that one security expert has noted that the social media platform has restored a staggering 34,000 messages. The flaw also appears to affect retweets that have been deleted.

The problem seems pervasive, but there is only anecdotal evidence to go on. The majority of those affected appear to be individuals who have erased multiple tweets at once using a third-party service like Redact or TweetDelete. The way a firm deals with and protects your personal information might be judged in part by how they manage this seemingly minor issue. Someone who used to work as a Twitter Site Reliability Engineer speculated on Mastodon that the issue “sounds a lot like they moved a bunch of servers between data centers and didn’t properly adjust the topology before reinserting them into the network.

The social networking website has experienced some strange times in recent months. San Francisco has begun investigating the site for possible violations of building codes, and technical difficulties have plagued the platform. All of this has resulted in a precipitous drop in usage, and rivals are waiting in the wings to swoop in and pick up the stragglers.
